MRI Indicators of Bipolar Disorder: Affect of Age and Medication

Researchers at the Yale School of Medicine have been using MRIs to research bipolar disorder. Specifically they are measuring a part of the brain that regulates emotions, the ventral prefrontal cortex, that lies above the eyes. Their findings indicate that changes in the brain that are important indicators of bipolar disorder are not prominent until young adulthood and are reduced in persons taking mood-stabilizing medications.
