Living with Siblings Who Have Disabilities

Monday May 1, 2006
Journalist Joel Gehringer with the Lincoln Journal Star asks what it’s like to have a sibling with a disability. Don Meyer, a noted authority on the psychology and emotional effects of living with disabilities, shares, “No one will spend more time with that family member with a disability than brothers and sisters … They're going to be in each other's lives longer than anybody will, including parents.” Gehringer reports additional insights from Meyer as well as siblings.

So he copied a premise from The NYT.

But ONCE AGAIN, no one asks the disabled siblings. Do we not have opinions or something? Anyone who doesn’t realize those with disabilities have opinions in the 21st century has no business being a reporter.

My daughter(24) who was diagnosed with manic-depression(B-P)years ago is still very much violent when she gets into her mood swing. Everyday that I can remember she is getting mad and usually pisses everyone off around her. She constantly throws HUGE tantrums. Can’t she be treated prooperly with the right medication or does she and everyone around her have to live like this forever? Is there a chance she doesn’t have BP? Maybe a mis-diagnosis? Or does this sound like BP? Thanks, Dave Basch, father

Sounds very much like Bipolar. Fortunately, it can be treated with medications such as Abilify, Ritalin, or Lithium. However, medications do come with side effects so be patient. It may take a while to get her stabilized. I wish you the best of luck.
