Topamax (generic name topiramate) is an anticonvulsant often prescribed as a mood stabilizer for those with bipolar disorder. It is also prescribed to treat migraines. Dr. Brian Lipps, the About Guide to Kidney Diseases, shares a word of caution regarding this medication, “Although not widely appreciated, it is becoming increasingly clear that it can increase the risk of getting kidney stones. Researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Canter at Dallas recently published an article describing how it might be doing so.” How significant is the risk and what can you do?
