To Grandmother’s House We Go – Traveling for the Holidays

The holiday season is a special time for family, a time to return home. It is time-honored to come together and celebrate family traditions. One of my earliest childhood memories is singing, “Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go” as we drove the hour trip Christmas day to my grandparent’s house for Christmas dinner and more presents. However, our families are often scattered far and wide so longer, extended trips are now part of the tradition for many.

And yet, people with severe mental illnesses often worry about traveling. One member of this community shares her frustration writing, “How are we supposed to get places when unstable?” Following are a few suggestions, many contributed by other community members, that may help alleviate some of these fears and make needed traveling more tolerable.
