In a town hall meeting in New Hampshire on August 11, “Linda Becher, an audience member, specifically asked the president about access to mental health care and its impact on society. The president acknowledged the seriousness of mental illnesses and the reality that many existing insurance policies do not cover them on the same terms as physical illnesses. President Obama also expressed his desire to include mental health care as part of health care reform.” NAMI offers a video clip and a transcript of the exchange.
The debate and discussion regarding health care reform continues in every news feed and on every news broadcast, but I’ve noticed this community has been relatively silent on the issue. Furrybabies shared in a forum post that she is “hoping that Obama can push his health care reform through,” but I couldn’t find any other discussions. Do you have high hopes or are you worrying yourself senseless? ~Kimberly

Yes, I’m worried sick about Obamacare. My son is bipolar and we’ve been through some insurance nightmares. Now he is on Medicaid and I’m afraid that it will be cut to pay for Obamacare. I don’t want the same people who have bungled Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, the US Postal Service, the VA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, etc. to be controlling our health care. More competition is needed to control costs, not more federal control which is fraught with fraud and waste. Let people have health savings accounts and tax breaks and let them do their own shopping for the most economical health care services. Costs only started spiraling out of control when the federal government got involved with Medicare/Medicaid. Obamacare will only bring rationing, long waits for care, and a scarcity of doctors.
I completely agree with the poster above! Government has proven they cannot successfully run ANYTHING, and now we are going to trust them with our own physical and mental health? NO WAY! If Obamacare passes, we are doomed.
Unfortunately, the above posters appear to know nothing about the proposed healthcare initiative; instead they have bought into the popular rhetoric. People need to do their own research – I myself have read (yes, the entire bill) the proposals, and there is no 1)rationing of care; 2) nationalization/government control of healthcare; 3) long waits . . . if your son is on Medicaid, how do you think you will pay for a “health savings account?” Do you really have $10-30K per year to put toward savings for medical care? I know I don’t. What if you get cancer, or need heart surgery, or get into a terrible accident? What if you suddenly became unemployed? Did you know the president has persuaded the pharmaceutical companies to put up 50% of the cost of the “donut hole” for seniors’ medications? I don’t know about you, but my bipolar prescriptions cost over $2800/month. There is no way I could afford to save that much in a year, much less for any other medical costs. Again, I say, do the research for yourselves before you condemn what you so disrespectfully call “Obamacare.” Stop being sheep, listening to the fearmongers and those who will lose financially if this health care reform goes through – the INSURANCE COMPANIES that you purport to despise so much. And as far as shopping around for the best deal – yeah, try it. Especially with your son’s “preexisting condition.” If they even do take him, they won’t cover treatment for his bipolar for months, or even years – if at all. Please, think for yourselves.
It was disappointing when California gov cut SSI twice. I don’t think it was a fair way to help Ca budget. Alot of disabled people are now stuggling. Dental benefits were cut also. It’s scary to me. I still have med-i-cal for meds and doctors, but I’m hoping no more benefits of supplemental security income are going to be cut. The ca.gov cut alot of important programs, now I hear he may cut social security. I don’t understand why Obama can’t stop Arnold S.
I agree with Christy. Don’t be fooled by the political rhetoric being thrown around by a few crackpots. The new plan will not cut Medicare or Medicaid except where inefficiencies are in place (like when they took my brother’s medical history 4 times in 12 hours etc. – That was not necessary, but we paid for it with our tax dollars).
I’m tired of people complaining and comparing this to Social Security, like that’s a bad thing. Do you know ONE Senior who would give up their SS benefits? No – they LOVE it. They need it. It works. As for the post office – who else can get your letter across the continent for just .47 ? Not FedEx, Not UPS. Our President has said in front of congress, the citizens of the US and the world that he will not sign a bill that does not pay for itself, so we won’t end up with the debt that regular Medicare and SS have caused. We will learn fro our mistakes on that part of the issue. Is the point that there is a CHANCE that things might go wrong? Because we KNOW things are going wrong now and anything else has GOT to be better.
I could go on, but the fact of the matter is that If you are unhappy with your insurance company for their high premiums to both you and your employer, high out of pocket costs, lack of coverage of items and blocking you for pre-existing conditions (and who isn’t?) then you should welcome these reforms with open arms. With a Public Option you would have the chance to get healthcare without the 30% in overhead and profits that the insurance companies lop right off the top. There really is no need for insurance companies – they produce nothing – they simply collect money push paper and take a percentage. We would be wise to take out the middle man and remove that 30% expense immediately. Thats’ just with current pricing of premiums and out of pocket expenses. With true competition with a Public Option, the current system would be forced to compete like any other industry to give you the most for less. We already pay more for our health care in America than any other industrialized nation, yet rank only 32nd in quality of care. It’s time we got our money’s worth.
Why should the insurance companies be profiting off our pain and suffering in the first place? The Fire Departments and the Police Departments don’t – and they are taxed-based public services. What about our armed services? Or the salaries we pay to our government officials. Those are all non-profit services paid for directly by our tax dollars. Why then should health care be a “for profit” business (which has not even been subject to anti-trust laws? They have been pampered and coddled by special interest groups at great cost to the American people. They’re free ride is over. I sincerely hope for TRUE reform, with a strong Public Option – especially for those of us with big medical bills. We need it more than most. Here’s to health care reform with a Public Option to create competition for lower priced and better quality of health care for us all.
