Share with others the events and symptoms that led to your bipolar diagnosis. Some people are diagnosed after episodes of mania or hypomania. Others (like me) are initially diagnosed with depression and later receive a diagnosis of bipolar disorder when manic or hypomanic symptoms appear. The defining event may be something that leads to arrest and/or hospitalization. What led up to your bipolar diagnosis?

I would like to share my story and where I am now, hopefully to help someone feel better about where they are.
I sufffer from Bipolar II. There’s never enough information about Bipolar II…sometimes I feel as though I’m actually normal compared to Bipolar I. I need to be able to recognize symptoms that I can explain away because all of the attention that is paid to Bipolar I. I sometimes feel abandoned by your column because hypomania isn’t full-blown delusional and can be rationalized by “irritability”.
Please give me more in-depth information about Bipolar II.
I agree 110% with Krisco! I’m also Bipolar II (rapid-cycling). I’ve never had a full-blown manic episode, I’ve never been hospitalized, etc.
The best thing a person can do is stay on there meds.
I totally agree with jsimann. I once had a full blown manic episiode which led to hospitalization, thank God. The memory of that scary experience keeps me in check with my meds. I have never ever skipped a dose in 7 years since that episode. I always think about my diagnosis (BP I) and only recently came to accept it. I live a normal life and am able to recognize early warning signs of hypomania. My family and my doctor all know what to do. I am a very fortunate person.
I have rapid cycling bipolar disorder. I have had full blown mania before. Before I was diagnosed, I had a lot of moodswings as a child. I developed panic attacks in high school. I was in a bad relationship as a young adult. When I got out, I started having depression, feelings of wanting to hurt my child (which I think was post partem psychosis). That scared me. I went to get help and they diagnosed me as just having depression. The trouble was , I was going through more than depression. I started going through hallucinations. I hallucinated about God telling me to kill myself to be a saint for all those who commit suicide.
Finally I was put in the hospital and given the right diagnosis: bipolar disorder mixed states. I was later diagnosed with rapid cycling. I cycle several times a day. ultra rapid cycling, which is very wearing on yr moods.
I agree about the difficulty with bipolar II. Sometimes i think–maybe I don’t have this? Although I am onb lamictal & most of the time it works pretty well-still ups & down a lot. I had a really hard time & still do with the diagnosis, mostly becuase my ex was bipolar I & we have a child together–I am so scared he will have it, I don’t even want him tested bec then he would be labelled in school
Well I’ve had bipolar since I could remember. I was manic and sleepless in my childhood…among other things (very aggressive and hypersexual). I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 in my mid-teens.
I think my sleeping habits may have been a big predictor or cause of my bipolar disorder.
