Study Looks at Seroquel, Blood Sugar and Insulin

sugar cubesResearchers have found more evidence that Seroquel (quetiapine) has a negative effect on blood sugar levels and related factors. In this 8-week study, 17 patients with schizophrenia started taking Seroquel and had blood testing done at the beginning and then at weeks 2, 4 and 8. At the end, both weight and BMI were significantly higher. While fasting blood sugar, insulin and cholesterol levels were basically unchanged, insulin resistance and insulin secretion were significantly increased, and two patients showed signs of metabolic syndrome, a condition that puts patience at risk for serious illnesses including diabetes.

Although the study was small, the results definitely show that more research is needed in this area.

I’ve been taking Seroquel for around 4 years. So far, no problems with my weight or blood sugar.

Seroquel has been very helpful to me, all my levels are ok except my tryglicerides did rise at first. By sticking on a good eating plan I have actually been able to lose some weight on Sero. Nine months without a hint of psychosis, nine whole months!

Hydra,

I just got my labs back 8/15/11 and found out my triglycerides are at 531! I have an appt. w/cardio. on Fri. Been on Seroquel for probably 2 yrs. but last Nov. went up to 200 mg. Works great except I gained A LOT of weight and now Triglyc. problem. I also take Depakote which is known for weight gain. Should I be stable or fat (I wouldn’t say I’m obese)? I know what I choose but I’m not sure my husband would agree. I certainly don’t look like the woman he married. Hope you get this since your post was so long ago.

I took a whole bottle of this and lived thru it. Huge doses of
Neurition did that, over 800, mg, and I was prescribed 3600mg,
The 2nd time is was given to me, (I had forgotten the 1st time,
!) Nightmares, very intense 2), I walked like I was drunk upon waking, literally having to hold on to the walls. My last ex shrink said Seroquel was known for nightmares, and Rebbecca Riley aged 4 was given this med, even though it was never FDA approved for children, and she died as other drugs and OTC were given to her..

I’ve been taking a relatively low dosage of Seroquel and have found that not only does it help me sleep well but it seems to supplement my antidepressant. No negative effects so far.
