One more step has been made in discovering the genetic causes of bipolar disorder. A large study of the human genome has identified a variation in a gene called neurocan (NCAN) as being significantly associated with BP."Our results provide strong evidence that genetic variation in the gene NCAN is a common risk factor for bipolar disorder," concludes lead research Dr. Sven Cichon. "Further work is needed now to learn more about the biological processes that NCAN is involved in and how NCAN variants disturb neuronal processes in patients with bipolar disorder."
It is well known that bipolar disorder has a strong heredity factor. While it remains unknown just how identifying genes and gene variants associated with illnesses will be used, I always feel positive when I read that research into the causes of bipolar disorder is producing concrete results.
