Norway Mass Murderer Anders Breivik Found Insane

By , About.com GuideNovember 30, 2011

Follow me on:

When Anders Breivik killed dozens of young people in Norway on July 22, 2011, I wrote that comments made by Dr. Tarjei Rygnestad, head of the Norwegian Board of Forensic Medicine, bothered me a lot. Specifically, he said that Breivik could not be insane (under the Norwegian definition of insanity) because severe psychosis would prevent a person from performing complex tasks like driving a car.

Now a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation has determined that Breivik was legally insane at the time of the murders. Prosecutor Svein Holden quoted the experts as calling Breivik someone "who finds himself in his own delusional universe, where all his thoughts and acts are governed by these delusions." He went on to say, "They conclude that Anders Behring Breivik during a long period of time has developed the mental disorder of paranoid schizophrenia, which has changed him and made him into the person he is today."

Dr. Rygnestad, who made the comments about psychosis back in July, has again showed his incompetence regarding psychiatric matters in his response to the ruling by the court. After saying, "That's interesting," he told the Associated Press "his earlier comments were based on 'secondary information' and that a person's mental state can only be determined through in-depth analysis." Associated Press says "he maintained his assertion that psychotic people typically aren't able to carry out complex tasks that require intricate planning."

"Secondary information"? Could that mean he's just quoting something he heard overheard in the men's room? The one thing that's clear to me about this issue is that Dr. Rygnestad should stop passing out misinformation and fade into the background before he embarrasses himself any further.

I was a social worker for many years and had many people on my caseload with Schizophrenia. I also observed numerous individuals experiencing “psychotic breaks”. Many individuals were able to perform complex tasks during these episodes. Some individuals could not. There is no definition that fits for all people with mental illness. That finding would be ridiculous.
Anyone with a mental illness must be evaluated on a case by case basis. Any competent psychiatrist knows this.

@ Carol…

Well, at least we now know that this Doc is not competent; to put it as gently as possible.

What a lot of people have to understand is that “judgement calls” if they are made are used with the FULL information at hand not with a strong belief in speculation. As Marcia as has shown many times through her own experiences, the major experts are the suffers themselves with regards to THEIR condition. Most Docs have to decide on THEIR call by what they see at that time. So Marcia’s comment may be right about what may have been mentioned in a restroom. We here in the UK had a pdoc Professor some years ago claimed a husband was the killer of his child after watching a TV documentary. Let the experts make the call that have the information and sufferer at hand.

WHY in God’s name would you post this article here? Isn’t it bad enough that the general public has the idea that mentally ill people are dangerous? Do you realize you are perpetuating the myth Marcia?

The Bible already says that insanity is due to adultery & can lead to blindness.

Adultery causes a lot of emotional pain for all involved, but I don’t see anything about insanity or adultery going by Scripture: http://christianity.about.com/od/Bible-Verses/a/Sexual-Sin.htm . Hopefully someone else with comment to bring this thread back on topic.

Well, I think it’s a fair posting. Why deney the fact that SOME persons with mental illness are dangerous, especially untreated. Having bipolar myself I don’t take this as further stigmatizing. It is a very real problem causing ever Jurat in the world to create a Mental Health legislation that allows persons at risk of harm to be detained and treated. I think the current watering down of the importance and severity of some persons experience of mental illness is more of a slap in the face….take a pill, shut up and go back to work cause “everybody can recover” is in vogue, which adds to more guilt to those of us who do have setbacks. I think tor educe stigma we should be free to discuss all of the extreams.
