Faith in Bipolar Disorder - Readers Find Help in Scriptures

By December 14, 2012

Follow me on:

A reader asked me, "What scriptures do people with bipolar disorder find helpful?" In turn, I posed the question to other readers, who responded with answers from the Old and New Testament and the Quran.

For example, two readers chose the Old Testament passage Joshua 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." One of these readers added, "This scripture is my rock because it reminds that there is a higher plan for my life despite being bipolar."

It is well-established that increased involvement in religious activity can be a symptom of mania or hypomania, but these scriptures come from people who have an abiding faith, something that has been found, for some people, to help improve the course of bipolar illness.

Thank you for doing this topic. It needs to be discussed and personally I find comfort and strength in Scripture and my faith. I have experienced the religiosity of mania and am able to differentiate the difference between my true faith and what are mental illness symptoms. Fortunately, my symptoms are well controlled with meds and therapeutic support.

I love that passage that says, Lift a rock and I’m there. Split a piece of wood and you will find me. At least I think that’s how it goes. I find comfort in it. God is everywhere. LIterally.

Hello I wanted to just tell you that scripture is Jeremiah 29:11 not Joshua. It’s one of my favorites.

Guide’s Note: Thank you for pointing this out, Shannon. Oddly enough, both people who referenced this passage said it was Joshua!
