About Valium - Early Tranquilizer, Still Prescribed

By March 11, 2014

Follow me on:

Back in the 1960s and 70s Valium was called "mother's little helper." It was "prescribed in vast quantities" by doctors to women (mothers and non-mothers) for anxiety, tension, you name it.

Today Valium is still prescribed, most often as the generic version diazepam. A friend of mine is taking it for severe muscle spasms. It can indeed be effective for treating anxiety. And unfortunately, it's often sold illegally. Because abuse or prolonged use can lead to addiction, Valium is a Class 4 controlled substance in the US, and patients can't get refills - they have to have a new prescription each month.

Anxiety and muscle spasms aren't the only uses for diazepam, and there are some important cautions and warnings. Here's an in-depth look at Valium/diazepam.

I am taking Valium and I am from the U.S. and I get refills without having to see my Dr. every month.People who are taking Benzodiazepines should be very careful if you are taking them a prolonged time.Benzodiazepines are very addictive, and can be very hard to get off of.
Never just stop taking these drugs without the help of your Dr.

I truly believe Valium is an incredibly useful drug, and can many great things. A couple times a year i land myself in the ER with another case of torticollis (a problem with the muscles in my neck that comes every now and then and is gone in a week or so) but it gets bad enough that they will prescribe me hydrocodone for the pain and valium to relax the muscles and help me sleep. Both the drugs work great for this situation, and while hydrocodone is pretty hard to obtain from a doctor unless you actually need it for real pain, valium on the other hand can be obtained incredibly easily in America to this day.
I’m a student at STLCC in MO and am writing a paper about the over prescription of mental health drugs in this country. These drugs have many legitimate uses, but are also used for pleasure and recreation. i have a few friends who are on drugs like klonopin and valium for “anxiety” and it just amazes me how many of these they are given by their doctors. These friends of mine may have some mild anxiety but nothing a haircut and some working out couldn’t fix, and i understand they are at fault for wanting and taking this medication, but something just seems wrong with the whole picture, like i don’t think they should have been even able to receive a prescription for these drugs. It’s just not write that doctors hand out drugs as addictive as these so readily, especially to kids and students. Drugs like these should be a last resort for problems like anxiety, and reserved for only the most severe cases. From my understanding drugs like these are rarely prescribed in other countries, at least not to the extent that america does it, we need to realize that this is a problem and these medications are just giving a crutch to our entire country, an addictive and dangerous crutch.

That is not true – that you can’t get refills of Valium. I get refills all the time.
