About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by the Medical Review Board

  • Request permission prior to starting a person-to-person chat.

  • Members have the right to refuse to give out any and all personal details.

  • Members have the right to refuse any request for person-to-person chat.

  • Unless reporting a harassment problem, request permission from HOSTs before beginning a private chat with them. Hosts are responsible for multiple duties, and it may be impossible to be in PC's and monitor the room at the same time; so please be understanding if they must decline to PC with you right away.

  • Our chat is a support group only. We cannot handle emergency situations on your behalf. We can and will encourage you to call 911, a crisis intervention line, your doctor, your family ... we will support, advise and share our personal success stories. But we won't call the police at any time or for any reason.

  • Members cannot select nicknames that end with ADM or HOST.

  • Triggering topics are allowed, provided members are courteous and respectful to each other's needs. Triggering topics include but are not limited to: suicide, self-injury, rape, sexual abuse, drug or alcohol abuse, and domestic violence. Please be courteous and ask for permission from the room first. Hosts do have the right to ask members to take a conversation into PC or Room #2 if it is particularly raw or upsetting to anyone.

  • You may be asked to change topics if the topic is controversial and is creating a great deal of arguing in the room.

  • Colored backgrounds for your text are prohibited. Visually, they have the same effect as shouting and make it difficult for others to follow conversations. Changing text colors is permissible provided that light colors like yellow are avoided.

  • Caps are prohibited for the same reason.

  • Chatters who are triggered by certain text colors may request that those colors not be used while they are in the room, but must allow time for the request to be acknowledged and changes made, especially if the room is quite full.

  • Don't monopolize the screen by posted song lyrics, long stories or jokes, or other off-topic messages.

  • Off-topic discussions belong in Room 3, the "Lounge."

  • The HOSTS are in chat to explain and enforce these guidelines and rules. Please feel free to discuss it with them (and ONLY them) in private chat if you have any questions.
