Two Weeks

by Pete Poulin

She took the first train home
Though she didn't care to ride alone
Said she couldn't wait to see her man

Two weeks was much too long
Didn't think the fire would be gone
Gonna try to save it if she can

Did we fail the test?
Some might say "We would have guessed"
But I can't

She called him up that day
All the time he was away
He never stopped to drop a dime

And though she wouldn't say
She met someone while he was away
After some time thought it was justified

And in a bad exchange
He could sense her feelings change
Though he couldn't stand to be criticized

Two weeks was much too long
Now they couldn't seem to get along
Didn't want to have to start again

Did we fail the test?
Some might say "It's for the best"
But I can't

It's hard to hear you baby
with this ringing in my ears
I could help you baby
if you'd quiet all my fears
But I can't seem to chase your tears away

Did we fail the test?
Some might say "Just give it a rest"
But I can't
