Welcome to Bipolar Disorder chat - a gathering place for support, information exchange and fellowship for those affected by this mental illness or those seeking information about manic depression resources available here at this website.

MISSION

This is a chat room for those with bipolar disorder. Our purpose is supporting each other as we cope with manic depression.

Hosts are there to carry through that mission in any way we can. We hope you'll find our presence in the room a help to you. But we are not doctors, therapists, crisis intervention workers, researchers, government lobbyists, charitable foundations, educators or system administrators. We cannot change the software, the medicine, the Internet, or your condition.

ROOM 1 - Support and Topic Chats

We extend to all members and visitors an open invitation to stop by this room whenever you need a little encouragement or a friendly, understanding cyberhug. The purpose of Room 1 is to provide a place for our community to seek support for and discuss issues regarding bipolar disorder. Hosted chats listed on our schedule as "Support Chat" will be held in Room 1, and volunteer Hosts and Assistants may be present at other times to give guidance. Whether a volunteer is present or not, we ask that this room remain at all times on topics relating to this disorder. Please remember at all times that Room 1 is focused on support - meaning that when someone is in need, or a newcomer enters with a question, that person should receive supportive attention from chatters who are present.

ROOM 2 - Topic Chats

The purpose of this room is to hold our regularly scheduled, hosted special topic chats, as well as any special guest events. When attending these sessions, please remain on topic. Generally, such events will have at least one Host present, although there are, of course, times when the scheduled Host is unavoidably absent and was not able to arrange for someone to cover. Topic chats include Newly Diagnosed, Survivors, and many other subjects.

Note: If Topic Chats overlap on the schedule, one of them will be held in Room 1.

ROOM 3 - Members' Lounge

Now, for all you folks who like to meet up with your buddies and let the conversation flow, this is the place for you! Welcome to the Members' Lounge. This room is our space dedicated to open discussions. Hosts cannot be present at all times, and when the room is unmoderated, we expect chatters to treat each other with courtesy and respect.

Suicidal?

We know first hand how very difficult this disorder is for each of you. We know that at times your coping skills have been exhausted and you feel trapped - you feel as if you simply cannot go on another day. We understand the hurt, the pain, the confusion. However, we must explain that none of our chat hosts are trained suicide prevention counselors. Yet because we have been where you are, because we truly do understand, we have compiled a list of Crisis Resources for you. If you are feeling suicidal, please jump on over to that page so that you can get the help you need, the help you deserve!
