Definition:
Acute in medical terms refers to an illness with a rapid or abrupt onset, generally with a short, severe course and requiring prompt treatment. The opposite of acute is chronic. You will find mania often described as acute and depression often described as chronic.
Pronunciation: uh-KYOOT
Examples:
Acute appendicitis is a condition that requires immediate treatment or it can prove fatal.
