Definition:
Bipolar V Disorder - BP V for short - is a condition where a person has major depression, no mania or hypomania, and has blood relatives who do experience mania. BP V is not an officially recognized diagnosis, since it is not included in the DSM-IV. Dr. Jim Phelps of Psycheducation.org discusses bipolar V at BipolarWorld and makes a strong case for taking bipolar family members into account when treating a patient with major depressive disorder. He points out that such a person may be more likely to suffer antidepressant-induced mania or hypomania (see Bipolar IV Disorder).
