Definition:
A monoamine is a molecule containing one amino acid. Monoamines of interest in bipolar disorder include the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Another monoamine is histamine, which has multiple functions in the body. See Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).
