Definition:
A neurotransmitter is a chemical substance that transmits nerve impulses across a synapse - the space between nerve cells or neurons. In bipolar disorder, the important neurotransmitters are serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and GABA. Histamine plays a role in some side effects.
