Definition:
Tranquilizers are medications that act as calming agents. There are several classes of tranquilizers; those used in treating bipolar disorder include antipsychotic and antianxiety or anxiolytic drugs. These are known respectively as major and minor tranquilizers.

The most frequently used major tranquilizers include the phenothiazines such as Thorazine (chlorpromazine) and Mellaril (thioridazine). Haldol (haloperidol) is another antipsychotic medication frequently used to calm patients.

The most common antianxiety medications are the Benzodiazepines, including Librium (chlordiazepoxide), Valium (diazepam), Ativan (lorazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin/Rivotril (clonazepam) and others.
