Definition:
Tyramine is a substance found in some foods such as aged cheeses, processed meats, overripe fruits, some red wines, tap beer and ale, and soy products. An excess of tyramine can trigger migraines.

People taking Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants need to follow a tyramine-restricted diet. The mechanism of MAOIs is such that a dangerous amount of tyramine can build up, leading to hypertensive crisis, stroke, and even death.
Pronunciation: TIE-ruh-meen
