Definition:
Benzodiazepines - sometimes called benzos for short - are a class of medications used to treat anxiety and help a person sleep. They are sometimes known as minor tranquilizers and are classed as sedatives-hypnotics. Physical dependency may occur resulting in withdrawal symptoms if the medication is discontinued, and abuse is also a possibility for some patients. Short-term use is sometimes advisable. In some cases, these drugs are used to treat acute episodes of anxiety and anxiety disorders.
