Definition:
Hepatic means of or relating to the liver.

A number of over-the-counter and prescription medications can affect the liver, including drugs prescribed for bipolar disorder. Drugs that can harm the liver are known as hepatotoxic. Before prescribing any medication that can cause liver injury for you, your doctor should know if you already have impaired liver function, as this may affect his or her choice of medication. If you are taking a medication that can affect the liver, your doctor will often do periodic liver function blood tests to make sure there are no problems.
