Hyperglycemia

Definition:
Hyperglycemia is an abnormally high level of glucose (sugar) in the blood. This condition can exist on its own or as a symptom of diabetes. Symptoms include:
  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Overeating
  • Weakness
Many of the medications prescribed for bipolar disorder cause weight gain which can cause both elevated cholesterol and hyperglycemia. Atypical antipsychotic medications carry warnings to watch for symptoms of hyperglycemia.
