Definition:
Lamotrigine is the generic version of the brand name drug Lamictal. Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant medication that is also used as a mood stabilizer to treat bipolar disorder. Since generic drugs cost less than their brand name counterparts, lamotrigine is frequently prescribed as a substitute for Lamictal.

Lamotrigine is required by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to have the same effects as Lamictal at the same strengths. However, lamotrigine may contain other ingredients (called excipients), such as dyes, fillers and binders, that are different from those in Lamictal. Thus, it is possible for people who are sensitive to one or more of these excipients to experience side effects that are not listed as known side effects of Lamictal.
