Definition:
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a very rare, severe inflammatory eruption of the skin and mucous membranes. It most frequently affects children and young adults. This illness may be a result of infection, allergic reaction to drugs (including the mood stabilizer Lamictal (lamotrigine), or have no obvious cause.

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is characterized by an initial flu-like period of fever, headache and sore-throat, following by skin eruptions. Patients taking Lamictal should report symptoms immediately to their doctors or seek emergency treatment, as SJS can cause disfigurement and is fatal in approximately 5 percent of cases.
