Thank you for the article about omega-3s. I have had excellent calming, mood-diminishing effects with 6000 mg/day of EPA-DHA. Mood changes are still instant, but the moods are really mild - no screaming meemies or suicide threats. My husband is spending a lot more time at home, too. I scared him with the changes, he told me.
The 6000mg/day is the minimum recommended by the FDA for treating cholesterol problems. The first 2 months, my LDL went down 40 points.
Using over 2500mg/day requires using more antioxidants (brightly pigmented fruits and vegetables, red wine, chocolate), because our bodies tend to oxidize the omega-3 before it's metabolized. There is research indicating lowering of blood pressure. I will attest to that, too. I was, in general, 140/80 for years; now I am usually 115/70. Ta-DA!
It is much more efficient if split into 4 doses daily. I tend to get start feeling weird if I go more than 5 or 6 hours without it. I have never considered taking all 6000 mg at one time. That's a really disgusting idea.
With me, omega-3s work better than Lithium salts or crap like Valium (the olden days), Prozac or Paxil. Prozac turned my nephew into a zombie, and my granddaughter got suicidal after Paxil was prescribed. I gave her some of my omega-3s and she noticed the relief immediately. Now she's got a full-time job as an accountant in her uncle's business. He is using omega-3s also, and doesn't bother going to anger management classes any more - his wife says he's much easier to live with. My other son, the accountant's father, has a much milder case of the bipolars and gets by with better diet, more exercise, regular sleep hours and lots of fish.
