I was born and bred in the industrial northwest of England. Not the easiest starts to life. My mother had had some "difficulties," but that was a family secret. Nonetheless, home life was tough and stability was not forthcoming.

Mental illness is rife within my family, as is academic success. I'm a believer in the "fine line" theory.

As far back as I can remember I've struggled with feeling different and deep depressions. I was untreated until I was 35 years old, and during that time I lost two families and was forced to disconnect from my own nuclear family.

The diagnosis of bipolar disorder was a huge relief. I was no longer to blame for all that had gone before, and I began to learn how to rebuild my life. Now I'm managing to pursue a degree in psychology and work as an artist, too.

Its true, a bipolar person CAN have a life. Despite being bipolar with ultra rapid cycling and mixed states, I'm optimistic about having a life with a future.

For the past five years the About Bipolar Disorder chat rooms have been a source of companionship and support. I consider it my privilege and honour to be able to serve my friends and fellow bipolars as a Host.
