US State Advocacy Programs

Advocacy is the work of organizations or individuals to protect the legal, civil, and human rights of people with disabilities such as bipolar disorder (manic depression). An advocate serves as an intercessor, speaking on someone else's behalf to ensure against discrimination and loss of rights. Found here are links to US state advocacy programs.

Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program

Arizona Center for Disability Law

The Arizona Center for Disability Law advocates for the legal rights of persons with disabilities to be free from abuse, neglect and discrimination, to have access to education, health care, housing and jobs, and other services in order to maximize independence and achieve equality.

Arkansas Disability Rights Center

The DISABILITY RIGHTS CENTER (DRC) is a private non-profit agency with offices in Little Rock, Arkansas. Since 1977 the Governor of Arkansas has designated DRC the independent rights protection and advocacy system for persons with disabilities in Arkansas. DRC operates under authority outlined in Federal law and is funded primarily by the Federal government.

California Protection & Advocacy, Inc.

Protection and Advocacy, Inc., (PAI) is a nonprofit agency that advances the human and legal rights of persons with disabilities. PAI began protecting the rights of Californians with disabilities in 1978. We now provide services to people with disabilities under five federal programs

Colorado Legal Center

The Advocacy Center for Persons with Disabilities, Inc., is a non-profit organization providing protection and advocacy services in the State of Florida. Our mission is to advance the dignity, equality, self-determination and expressed choices of individuals with disabilities.

Georgia Advocacy Office

The Georgia Advocacy Office (GAO) is a private non-profit corporation. Its mission is to work with and for oppressed and vulnerable individuals in Georgia who are labeled as disabled or mentally ill to secure their protection and advocacy. GAO's work is mandated by Congress, and GAO has been designated by Georgia as the agency to implement Protection and Advocacy within the state.

Hawaii Disability Rights Center

HDRC is the designated Client Assistance Program (CAP) and Protection and Advocacy (P&A) System for Hawaii's estimated 180,000 residents with disabilities. We strive to serve as many individuals with disabilities with as many different legal rights issues as our resources will allow.

New Mexico Protection

The Protection and Advocacy System (P&A) is a private, non-profit organization which protects and promotes the rights of people with disabilities in New Mexico. P&A is the state's only legal rights center for people with disabilities. Each year, after public hearings and comment, P&A sets priorities for the cases and disability problems it will address.

New York Commission on Quality of Care

North Carolina Governor's Advocacy Council

Oklahoma Disability Law Center, Inc

Oregan Advocacy Center

OAC is an independent non-profit organization which provides legal advocacy services for people with disabilities anywhere in Oregon. OAC is designated under federal law as the protection and advocacy system for Oregon, but it is not a part of the state or federal government. OAC has attorneys and advocates who assist people with disabilities.

Pennsylvania Protection and Advocacy

PP&A should be considered a primary source of support to anyone in the state of Pennsylvania whose goal is to protect the rights of persons with disabilities. Assistance may be provided to consumers, families of consumers, professionals, local service providers, county and state agencies, and any others that contact the agency.

Washington Protection & Advocacy System

The Washington Protection and Advocacy System (WPAS) is a private, non-profit organization that has been protecting the rights of people with disabilities in the state of Washington since 1972.

Washington DC University Legal Services

Services provided by ULS include information and referral; education and training; investigation of reported or suspected instances of abuse or neglect; legal counsel; technical assistance, and litigation services; and technical assistance regarding legislative and policy concerns. All services are offered free of charge to eligible individuals.

West Virginia Advocates, Inc

WVA provides information, referral and technical assistance on legal, civil and service rights to people with disabilities and their families, friends, advocates, guardians and representatives, service and support providers, and the public. WVA provides direct advocacy, including negotiation, mediation, investigation and legal representation as well as education and training.

Wisconsin Coalition for Advocacy

The Wisconsin Coalition for Advocacy provides protection and advocacy for people with disabilities throughout the state. WCA works throughout the state with individual consumers, their families, human service and other professionals, and policymakers who make and implement decisions on disability rights.

Wyoming Protection & Advocacy System, Inc

Wyoming Protection & Advocacy System's mission is to establish, expand, protect and enforce the human and civil rights of persons with disabilities through administrative, legal, and other appropriate remedies.
