What symptoms did you have before you were diagnosed?

Insomnia for weeks, then could not get enough sleep.

Hyperactive with talking, activities,no need for sleep or rest.

Carelessness in choosing partners, little concern re sexual activity.

Happy, upbeat, able to do anything, aggressive; then sad, weepy, angry, exhausted, helpless and hopeless.

What events led to your being diagnosed bipolar?

I was sad, weepy, lonely, hopeless and helpless, having many mood swings, but the sadness persisted with lack of initiative, sleeping long hours, social isolation. I researched after antidepressants made me much worse. I decided I had Bipolar and went to a psychiatrist to have him confirm it ... he did.

Lessons Learned

  • Nothing I don't think. The resources years ago were not what they are today, and I did all I could to find out what was happening to me.

What Is Your Current Diagnosis?

Bipolar hypomania

Do You Agree With the Diagnosis? Why or Why Not?

Yes. My episodes were more depression than manic and when I was on what I thought of as a high it was nothing as described in manic depressives.

The medication has made great changes in my life and with that I know it is a true diagnosis as it would not be changed with the meds.

Additional Thoughts

I suffered these symptoms for years. I think since I was a young child, but no one picked up on it. I was always the black sheep of the family, though I did not stray far from the straight and narrow; when I did it was in my own life and did not really affect others.
