My Spending Problem - Then and Now
When I separated from my husband a few years back, I was out of control, and went deeply into debt. Now I pay off my credit card as I go and keep a very close eye on finances.
The cure was the horrible experience of being so in debt. I am doing fine now, with an occasional slip. I vowed to never allow the credit card companies to control me again, so it is fear of going thru that again that keeps me on top of things.
My Spending Control Strategy
1. Made the decision that I wanted to be in control - not the credit card companies. They were charging fees, I swear, just for the fun of it. Very abusive!
2. Every time I make a purchase, I pay the card online as soon as possible. I made it part of checking my email. It's a habit now.
3. I focus on how good it feels to know I am not collecting a bunch of junk - and it's better for the environment, too.
Advice
- Picture yourself out of debt
- Be happy that you're not making the greedy credit card companies rich - and they ARE greedy and abusive. Some of their practices have now been outlawed, but not enough of them.
Special notes - internet shopping
Picture yourself having to pay the bill - stay on top of ALL your bills, and NEVER buy something you don't need unless you truly have the money.
Special notes - dealing with creditors
Pay them off asap and be done with them.
Special notes - credit cards
Stay on top of every charge and 'pay as you go.'
Final thoughts
I struggle with Bipolar every day, but one of my best coping skills is paying everything in full and on time. It really helps to keep me sane and functioning.
