The Slynar Gene
Wednesday November 1, 2006
The October issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry published an article regarding the “Identification of the Slynar Gene (AY070435) and Related Brain Expressed Sequences as a Candidate Gene for Susceptibility to Affective Disorders Through Allelic and Haplotypic Association with Bipolar Disorder on Chromosome 12q24.” In more understandable terms, this means that researchers have identified a gene named the Slynar which is tied to bipolar disorder. The Scientist Live writes, “Bipolar disorder is known to run strongly in families, but the Slynar gene is one of just three genes now known to be implicated in susceptibility to the disorder. This gene appears to be present in around 10 per cent of bipolar disorder cases.” Report from Scientist Live | Abstract
