Pressure I can't run away from!

Monday May 4, 2009
In 2003 I wrote an article in my I'm Bipolar Journal called Overcommitment=Stress Squared. I'll bet most of you know what that's like. Whether you have bipolar disorder or not, when you get too much on your plate you just want to run away and hide.

Now, in my new home, I'm taking on all kinds of new tasks. Being a volunteer is rewarding, and I'm meeting lots of great people, but wow, it's demanding! I took over the Homeowners' Association's newsletter and website. I'm working on the park district's butterfly garden. And I creating all the documents - including a very painstaking map - for the Community Garage Sale. And that's in addition to my three paying jobs.

But not only that - I'm having a garage sale. A big one. I brought way too much stuff with me when I moved. Because of all the other demands, I was only able to start putting prices on things Sunday. That gives me today and tomorrow to finish everything up and set up for Thursday. Yikes!

Of course, if you know me, you know I ordered garden plants. This year I ordered them without the least idea where I would put them. It's almost a blessing that spring is so late this year, because it should still be cool enough to plant after the garage sale is over ... if I have the strength.

Still, I just want to hide in bed. I take too-long breaks playing solitaire or Hatchlings over at Facebook. Yet I do find that those breaks are rejuvenating, so I guess there's some good in them.

The only thing that is halfway saving me is making a realistic list first thing in the morning and following it as closely as possible. Without that list, I'd be lost.

How about you? What do you do to keep on task when the pressure's on and you can't run away from it?

WOW that’s alot of stuff to balance. When I worked I always had several projects going at once. Since i got on ssdi i have had to cut way back. if i can’t do it i say no. I can’t always do that so i get a little overextended some times.
It feels like i have a part time job. I have in home care to help me cook, clean, organize my piles of stuff and run errands. I have another woman who takes me places since i don’t have a car. I have two case managers and a therapist and a pdoc. that’s six people with different schedules so i spend a lot of time on the phone.
the way i handle it is i have unlimited long distance and talk to a bp friend almost daily. We help motivate eachother or tell eachother to slow down and take a nap and eat.
It works for us. she has no services and gets overwhelmed. I help her do problem solving and we often come up with ways she can get what she needs. It works for us.Thanks for writing and good luck on your garage sale!
