Definition:
Xanax -- generic alprazolam -- is a benzodiazepine anti-anxiety medication also used to treat panic attacks. It may also be used as a hypnotic to induce sleep. Xanax is generally recommended for short-term use. As in all benzodiazepins, it can be addictive, and withdrawal effects may be severe. Other uses include:
  • To relieve or reduce muscle spasms
  • For alcohol withdrawal symptoms
  • Panic disorders
  • Epilepsy and other convulsive disorders
