Hyponatremia

Definition:
Hyponatremia is a low concentration of sodium in the blood. Symptoms of hyponatremia include:
  • confusion
  • drowsiness / tiredness
  • dry mouth
  • increased thirst
  • lack of energy
  • not passing much urine
  • (if very severe) convulsions (seizures)
  • (if very severe) coma
Hyponatremia may occur as a rare side effect of several medications, including:
  • Prozac / fluoxetine
  • Celexa / citalopram
  • Paxil / paroxetine
  • Zoloft / sertraline
  • Trileptal / oxcarbazepine
A low concentration of sodium in the blood can be dangerous for persons taking Lithium. See Lithium: Major Precautions and Warnings.
