As I sat there sobbing quietly, I noticed that the crowd had dissipated from my room, and nurses were running up and down the halls, eyes scanning every square inch of the facility. Three nurses ran toward the front door exit and began examining the door.
"There's a goddamn carrot jammed in the door. It was used to stop the door from closing. We've got an escapee." said one of the nurses.
More alarms were going off now. All the patients were asked to go to their rooms and wait there. More staff was coming in from the other units to search for Abe. Every room was searched, but to no avail. I sat on the edge of my bed with a wry smile on my face, wondering where Abe had gone to, but I already knew the answer to the question, and if there was any doubt, it was quickly put to rest when I glanced at the top of my wooden nightstand. The following note was etched into the wood with a pocketknife:
"Went to set a rabbit free. Remember, even the smallest things in life are worth living for."
I laughed aloud and then rested my head on my pillow. Tomorrow would be the start of a new day for me, and that is where all hope lies ... in starting over and finding the simple things in life that set you free.
